SCORING ON SONG
DEBUT
National hockey player Geraldine Ho hits No 1 spot with
"Special Agel"
By Balvinder Sandhu
She wrote the song on the eve of her O level
exam and ended up scoring an "A" for the paper and a
number one hit.
"I wrote the song when I was 16 and i had
my Human and Social Biology 'O' level exam the next day,"
recalled local singer Ger, who is actually 24-year-old Geraldine
Ho.
"I was lying in bed fed-up because I couldn't
get the tune right, and I told my mum about it. She told me to
pray, so I said a prayer and, after that, it just came to me at
once and I wrote the whole song."
Not only did she end up with an "A"
for her exam, that song, "Special Angel", her debut
single is currently number one on the Perfect 10 charts.
When asked how she felt about the song hitting
the top spot, Ger sad: "it's just a bonus for me. I never
expected it to do so well."
Although the song - which is featured on the
local compilation album "Dazed and Confused" - may sound
like a love song to many, it's actually a tribute to two people
who meant very much to Ger.
"I wrote the song for two people in particular,
my late principal, Mrs Mary Margaret Joseph, and my late grandfather,
Ho Chow," explained the former St Theresa's Convent student.
"The song tells a story, every verse tells
how I feel. For example, the second verse talks about the last
time I saw my late principal.
"It just says the things that I never got
to say to them when they were alive.'
The chirpy and bubbly fitness instructor also
revealed how she wrote her songs: "I usually put myself in
other people's shoes and try to feel what they are feeling.
"I don't force it out, I just let it come
naturally. I usually write songs to remember people by. It's better
than gifts because you can never destroy a song."
Ger had a headstart in her music career, having
learnt how to play the guitar when she was nine.
"I learnt how to play the guitar from my
uncle, and I'm still at the same three chords, actually,"
she joked.
She also used to sing at family gatherings with
her sisters, Jacqueline and Angeline, doing mostly a cappella
renditions of popular tunes.
if you think you've seen Ger before, it's because
she is a national hockey player who has been in the team since
she was aged 16 and was on the side which won the gold medal in
the 1992 Sea Games.
She is still in the national team and will be
participating in the coming Games.
When asked which she would go for if she had
to choose between hockey and music, Ger said that she would choose
music.
She said: "I love music more than hockey
and it was a dream come true for me to release the single."
As for the name Ger, she explained: "I figured
since I'm known as Gerry in the hockey circle, I would be known
as Ger in the music scene.
"Also, there is a certain mystery surrounding
the name. It's difficult to figure out whether it's a solo artiste
or a group."
Even though she has a number one song, you will
never see Ger all dolled up just for the additional publicity.
"I want people to listen to my songs. I
want to reach them with my music, " said the Bedok resident.
"What's more important is the feeling of
the song. Musicians are no products."
To date, she has written 18 songs and plans to
cut her own album soon.
"I hope my music will continue to be well-received
after 'Special Angel'," said Ger, who loves all types of
music, except heavy metal.
She will be performing at the official opening
of The Heeren on June 14.
"Dazed and Confused" is out at CD stores.
